In an impressive feat, the Biden campaign announced on Monday that it had raised a staggering $97 million in the fourth quarter, securing the largest war chest ever for a Democratic presidential candidate. This formidable fundraising effort only falls short of the $154 million raised by former President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the same period in 2019, leading up to the race that Trump ultimately lost to Biden.
The campaign disclosed that it ended December with $117 million in cash on hand, setting a strong financial foundation for future endeavors. In contrast, the Trump campaign has not yet revealed its fourth-quarter figures but was documented to have had $38 million in cash on hand at the end of September.
"These remarkable numbers validate the significance of the upcoming election in 2024, where our democracy and hard-fought rights and freedoms are at stake. The American people have demonstrated their awareness of the situation and are taking proactive measures early on to counter the extreme MAGA Republican agenda once again," stated Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the campaign manager. Notably, an overwhelming 97% of the donations received in the fourth quarter were under $200, reflecting the widespread grassroots support for Biden's cause.
While current RealClearPolitics poll averages indicate that Trump holds a slim lead over Biden in a potential rematch for 2024, with a margin of 1.1 percentage points, the road ahead remains uncertain. Trump is anticipated to secure an easy victory in Iowa's caucuses for the Republican nomination on Monday night. However, he will face a more formidable challenge in New Hampshire against the likes of former United Nations ambassador and South Carolina governor Nikki Haley.
