The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a warning regarding a batch of tainted eye drops that should be stopped from use immediately. Investigation reports reveal that the eye drops, sold by major retailers such as Walmart, CVS, Target, and Rite Aid, were manufactured by Kilitch Healthcare India Ltd., located in Navi Mumbai, India. According to the federal inspection report obtained by Bloomberg News, the factory conditions were found to be unsanitary, with workers even being barefoot in the facility. Furthermore, the report highlighted instances of falsified test results to create an illusion of product safety. As a result, the FDA has not only barred the Kilitch factory from exporting any more eye drops to the U.S but also requested a recall of their products. However, the factory has yet to comply with this request.
Kilitch Healthcare India Ltd. representatives were unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
In light of this development, the FDA issued a warning last month regarding more than two dozen over-the-counter eye drops sold by various retailers, including Walmart, CVS, Target, and Rite Aid. These eye drops posed a significant risk of causing eye infections, potentially leading to partial vision loss or even blindness. Consequently, the FDA advised consumers to cease purchasing and using these products immediately. Many retailers and pharmacies promptly removed them from their shelves. Additionally, these eye drops were also marketed under the Velocity Pharma brand and Cardinal Health Inc.’s Rugby and Leader labels.
If you are concerned about whether you possess any of these contaminated products, refer to the FDA's comprehensive list.
This recent development follows an earlier incident in which eye drops manufactured by a different Indian company were linked to eye infections in the United States. These infections resulted in four deaths and 18 cases of vision loss.
