Meta Platforms, the tech giant formerly known as Facebook, is set to launch a web version of its popular app Threads this week. The move comes as Meta seeks to compete with Elon Musk's X, previously known as Twitter.
Meeting User Demands
Users have long been requesting a desktop version of Threads, and according to The Wall Street Journal, Meta plans to satisfy this demand by going live with the web version early this week.
Falling Usage and the Need for a Web Version
Although Threads gained rapid popularity upon its initial launch, with over 100 million users within five days, its usage has since declined significantly. Data from analytics firm SimilarWeb shows that time spent on the microblogging app has dropped by 85% in just over a month.
To entice users back, Meta believes that offering a web version will not only make it easier to share posts on Threads but also attract more attention to the platform.
Meta's Response
When approached for comment by _, Meta did not provide an immediate response. However, head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, mentioned in a recent post that an early web version of Threads has been used internally by the company for a week or two. Mosseri acknowledged that some improvements are needed before making it accessible to all users.
New Updates and Features
In addition to the web version launch, Mosseri announced several new updates for Threads. Users will now have the ability to share threads in Instagram direct messages and can sort accounts they follow to see all the posts they have liked.
Aiming to Challenge X
While a web version may help bring back users, Meta recognizes that it needs more than just this upgrade to mount a significant challenge against X.
