Several online sellers are brazenly offering Eli Lilly & Co.'s retatrutide weight-loss drug for sale, despite the fact that it has not yet gained regulatory approval. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, many of these sellers are based in China and are shipping directly to consumers in the United States through platforms like Made-in-China.com. Interestingly, some U.S.-based websites are also marketing the drug on popular social media platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, Instagram, and Google.
Emerging Concerns
In a concerning instance, a fitness influencer is even promoting retatrutide through a newsletter. This comes after the Journal's previous report in August, which revealed that over 50 websites were selling counterfeit versions of semaglutide and tirzepatide – the active ingredients in FDA-approved drugs Ozempic and Mounjaro, developed by Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, respectively. Following the Journal's exposé, the FDA issued warning letters to two of these websites.
Increased Prevalence of Counterfeit Weight-Loss Drugs
The growing prevalence of counterfeit weight-loss drugs has raised alarm among both regulators and health professionals.
