The U.K. stock market experienced a slight uptick on Monday, with the FTSE 100 Index UKX growing by 0.89% to reach a value of 7,425.83.
Top Performers
Several companies within the FTSE 100 stood out for their notable increases in share prices. Leading the pack was Phoenix Group Holdings PLC, a life insurance company, which saw its shares climb by an impressive 5.67%. Aerospace products/parts firm Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC and building materials/products company Melrose Industries PLC also performed well, with their shares rising by 3.53% and 2.99% respectively. Smith & Nephew PLC, a medical equipment/supplies company, and British American Tobacco PLC completed the top five, with their stocks gaining 2.68% and 2.64% respectively.
Declines in the Industry
However, not all companies basked in positivity. Entain PLC, a gambling industries company, experienced the largest decline among the FTSE 100 constituents, with shares dropping by 3.67% on Monday. Finance companies firm Experian PLC and publishing company Informa PLC saw their shares decrease by 1.57% and 1.38% respectively. London Stock Exchange Group PLC and air freight firm International Distribution Services PLC rounded out the top five largest decreases with a decline of 1.24% and 1.08% respectively.
Currency and Commodity Market Activity
In terms of currency exchange rates, the pound strengthened against the dollar by 0.33% to reach $1.2267. The pound also gained 0.20% against the euro, with the exchange rate at €1.1463.
Meanwhile, Brent crude rose by 1.5% to $82.68. On the other hand, the yield on the 10-year gilt declined by 0.980 basis points to 4.322%.
