Volkswagen Group has found itself entangled in legal issues stemming from the sinking of a cargo ship in 2022 that was carrying thousands of vehicles, including models from Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen.
The Incident
The Felicity Ace, the ill-fated cargo ship, caught fire and went down off the coast of Portugal's Azores islands. The lawsuits allege that the fire was caused by a battery from a Porsche, leading to the loss of around 4,000 cars onboard.
Legal Action
The German carmaker has been named in civil lawsuits filed in a German court regarding the incident. Ship owner Mitsui OSK Lines and insurer Allianz are also involved in the litigation. The case, originally filed in Stuttgart, has been put on hold as settlement discussions take place for a separate lawsuit.
Official Statement
In response to the lawsuits, a Volkswagen spokesman confirmed the legal proceedings but refrained from providing further details due to the ongoing nature of the case. Mitsui, Allianz, and the Stuttgart court have not yet issued official comments on the matter.
As the situation unfolds, Volkswagen Group continues to navigate through legal challenges regarding the sinking of the Felicity Ace.
